One way we promote autism awareness at Oak Hill School is by taking our our students out into the local community. We do this to reinforce skills that are taught in the classroom and in therapies – academics, life skills, and social/communication skills, but the another benefit is that it gives the people in the community an opportunity to be introduced to and learn from our students – patience, tolerance, and joy. This “awareness” can help our students grow up in a community that views them with the same compassion and respect that we see in them.
Another way to celebrate Autism Awareness is to attend the 2nd Annual Autism Awesomeness event on Saturday, April 1 from 1:00 – 3:00 at St. Luke’s Church in San Rafael. This wonderful and free event is organized and facilitated by Karen Kaplan’s Offerings.
